Dogs poop. Mind blowing, right? Anytime you have a furry creature living in your house, accidents can happen. Instead of getting mad at your pup, a better alternative is to learn how to best clean up after them in the event that happens.

Inside the House
Most people get extra upset when their dog poops in the house, even though they don't do it on purpose. There's nothing quite like coming home from a long day at work and getting hit with that smell the moment that you walk in the front door.
It can be frustrating but, before getting mad, take a second to take a deep breath. Step back and evaluate the situation, and try to figure out why your dog may have had an accident. You may need to take them out more frequently, or maybe change up the food that they're eating.

Start By Picking Up the Actual Poop
Obviously, before you can clean up the stain, you need to first clean up the actual poop itself. The key here is not to spread it any further when you're attempting to actually pick it up. This is much easier when it is formed stool and not softer or liquid diarrhea.
A good suggestion is to actually slip a piece of cardboard or even a spatula (that you obviously won't use again) under the actual poop. Once you get the large amount out of the way, you can focus on the stain and any residue that it leaves behind.
Just make sure that if you clean up poop with paper towels or anything other than toilet paper, don't flush it down the toilet. Paper towels can clog your toilet and they are not meant to be flushed, so it would be best to just toss the whole thing in the garbage and then take it out.
Absorb the Moisture
After you've gotten the actual poop out of the way, you can move on to the stain. If there is any moisture left behind, paper towels or coffee filters work really well. Place them over the stain, and then put something heavy over it. Leave it for a few minutes to absorb, then get ready to attack the stain.
Use an Appropriate Stain Remover
Once the poop is out of the way and as much of the moisture is soaked up, let's look at the stain that has been left behind.
It's important to use an appropriate stain remover, instead of a one size fits all situation. There are plenty of different stain removers that are designed specifically to clean up dog poop. Most of them have enzymes that have been found to be able to break down the organic compounds that are found in dog poop, which helps to dissolve the stain quicker and more effectively. They also contain a variety of built-in odor neutralizers meant to specifically take care of dog poop related smells.
No matter what type of stain remover you use, make sure that you let it sit on the carpet for at least a few minutes so that it can soak in (the bottle usually has instructions detailing how long to leave it, too!).
Scrub Out the Rest of the Stain
All that's left to do now is to take care of the (hopefully) very little stain that has remained behind. The best way to do this is by using a damp sponge.
Start with just blotting up the stain, so that you don't inadvertently rub it deeper into the carpet fibers. If that doesn't take care of the stain, you can try to scrub out the stain.
Just make sure that you take the time to soak up any excess moisture that may be left over, so that it doesn't cause mildew or potential odors.
Follow Up With Some Odor Removal
Once the area is dry, if you notice any extra odor left over there is also a way that you can help to take care of that, too! The best part is that it uses products that can easily be found around the home, vinegar and baking soda.
Start by pouring plain white vinegar over the area. Don't be stingy! Make sure to soak the entire carpet, so that it can start to break down any remaining odor. You'll want to let it sit for at least a few minutes, too. After the time is up, make sure that you soak up any of the remaining vinegar before moving on the next step. Vinegar can actually react with other chemicals and become dangerous, so make sure it is thoroughly soaked up.
After the vinegar has been thoroughly soaked up and the carpet is dry, sprinkle baking soda over the area. Instead of vacuuming it up right away, let it stay overnight. Then, in the morning, vacuum the baking soda up and voila… an odor free, stain free carpet!
Make Sure You Check Your Dog's Poop!
This doesn't sound very exciting, we know, but it really is important. If your dog is not naturally prone to having accidents and suddenly starts having them, it may be an indication that there may be something else going on that should be looked into. A vet trip may also be in order, just to rule out any obvious health issues.
The obvious place to start is with consistency. Is it firm and formed, soft, or liquid? When picking it up, keep some of it to take to the vet to have tested. Vets can actually use the poop to test for parasites and other GI disorders, or can rule everything out entirely so that you can start to treat the accidents on a behavioral level.
After that, take note of the color. If there is any obvious blood, pay attention to that as well. Each of those things can give you a good indication of what may be going on.

It's much much easier to clean up dog poop where it belongs… outside! But that doesn't mean that you can't use a few helpful tips to help make the process a whole lot quicker.
The most important thing to remember is that you should always take a bag with you when you go for a walk… even if it's a quick walk! Dogs are unpredictable, and you don't want to be stuck with your dog having to go in a neighbor's yard with them sitting on the porch without a bag to pick it up with. That's how neighborhood rivalries start!
Luckily, there are plenty of companies that sell bag holders that you can clip right to your dog's leash before you head out on your walk. That way, you're guaranteed to never be without one when poop strikes. Plus, in a lot of places, it is actually illegal to not pick up your dog's poop.
